چکیده

We report the detection of nonradial g-mode oscillations in the DA white dwarfs HS 1039+4112 (B = 15.9) and HE 1429−0343 (B = 15.8) from time-series photometry made at the Loiano 1.5 m telescope. The two stars were previously selected as probable pulsators based on two-color photometry and spectral analysis respectively. Following our temperature and surface gravity determinations, HS 1039+4112 (Teff = 11 200 K, log g = 8.2) is located near the red edge of the ZZ Ceti instability strip, whereas HE 1429−0343 (Teff = 11 400 K, log g = 7.8) falls in the middle of the strip. Both stars show a multi-mode behavior with the main periods at about 850 and 970 s respectively, and relatively large amplitudes (∼7% and ∼2.5%).

On the Purity of the ZZ Ceti Instability Strip: Discovery of More Pulsating DA White Dwarfs on the Basis of Optical Spectroscopy

We report the discovery of two new ZZ Ceti pulsators, LP 133−144 and HE 1258+0123, selected on the basis of model atmosphere fits to optical spectroscopic data. The atmospheric parameters for LP 133−144, Teff = 11, 800 ± 200 K and log g = 7.87 ± 0.05, and for HE 1258+0123, Teff = 11, 410 ± 200 K and log g = 8.04 ± 0.05, place them within the empirical boundaries of the ZZ Ceti instability strip...

New evolutionary models for massive ZZ Ceti stars: I. First results for their pulsational properties

We present new and improved evolutionary calculations for carbon-oxygen white dwarf (WD) stars appropriate for the study of massive ZZ Ceti stars. To this end, we follow the complete evolution of massive WD progenitors from the zero-age main sequence through the thermally pulsing and mass loss phases to the WD regime. Abundance changes are accounted for by means of a full coupling between nucle...

Pulsating or not ? A search for hidden pulsations below the red edge of the ZZ Ceti instability strip ⋆

The location of the red edge of the ZZ Ceti instability strip is defined observationally as being the lowest temperature for which a white dwarf with a H-rich atmosphere (DA) is known to exhibit periodic brightness variations. Whether this cut-off in flux variations is actually due to a cessation of pulsation or merely due to the attenuation of any variations by the convection zone, rendering t...

New constraints on mode identification and pulsation properties

We present a detailed analysis of time-resolved optical spectra of the ZZ Ceti white dwarf, HS 0507+0434B. Using the wavelength dependence of observed mode amplitudes, we deduce the spherical degree, l, of the modes, most of which have l = 1. The presence of a large number of combination frequencies (linear sums or differences of the real modes) enabled us not only to test theoretical predictio...

PG 1541 + 650 : A new ZZ Ceti white dwarf ?

We report the discovery of a new pulsating DA white dwarf, or ZZ Ceti, from the list of the Palomar-Green survey, rediscovered in the ongoing Hamburg Quasar survey (HQS). PG1541+650 is one of the ZZ Ceti candidates listed in the analysis of 80 DA white dwarfs from the HQS. With an effective temperature of 12000 K, for a surface gravity logg=7.79, it lies in the ZZ Ceti instability strip. It is ...
